Nearly fifty years ago, the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy began its mission to protect our region’s natural treasures. Born from a grassroots movement, Land Conservancy emerged as Oregon’s first regional, nonprofit land trust, created by a community determined to protect the area’s unique natural wealth for future generations.
What started as a small effort has grown into a nationally accredited organization, now safeguarding nearly 13,000 acres across Jackson, Josephine, Curry, Coos, and southern Douglas counties.
Land Conservancy’s mission is: to conserve and enhance land in Southern Oregon, ensuring both human and natural communities can thrive forever.
They achieve this by partnering with local landowners, using conservation easements to protect private lands, and collaborating with communities to maintain public spaces.
Some of their successes include the preservation of the Rogue River Preserve, Sky King Cole Ranch, Oredson-Todd Woods, and Jacksonville Woodlands.
Visiting Land Conservancy protected lands offers a chance to explore some of the region’s most breathtaking landscapes. The Rogue River Preserve, for example, boasts two miles of riverfront, oak woodlands, and rare plant habitats. Guided walks and community events-like the annual All Member Picnic each June-invite the public to connect with nature, learn about local ecology, and celebrate conservation milestones. The yearly Conservation Celebration in October brings together supporters for an evening of food, fun, and fundraising, while special events honor the dedication of key members and donors.
Whether you’re hiking a trail, attending a picnic, or supporting their mission, the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy offers everyone a way to help ensure that the natural beauty and biodiversity of Southern Oregon endures for generations to come.
