Medford’s Pear Blossom Festival: A Celebration of Tradition, Community, and Fun
The Pear Blossom Festival began in 1954 as an idea inspired by Washington State’s apple festivals. It has since grown into Southern Oregon’s largest annual celebration. Today, it not only honors Medford’s pear orchards but also fosters community pride through scholarships for high school seniors and volunteerism.
The Pear Blossom Parade
The centerpiece of the festival is the Pear Blossom Parade, Southern Oregon’s largest parade. Scheduled for next Saturday, April 12th, at 11 a.m., it features over 150 entries and thousands of participants. The parade begins at Beatty Street and Central Avenue, proceeds down Central Avenue, turns onto West Main Street, and ends at Mistletoe Street. Spectators can expect vibrant floats, marching bands from seven local schools, vintage cars, and creative community entries. This year’s theme, “Pear of Paws,” celebrates Dogs for Better Lives as the grand marshal.
The Pear A Fare
For food and drink enthusiasts, the Pear A Fare is a must-visit. Held on April 11th (3 p.m.–10 p.m.) and April 12th (10 a.m.–6 p.m.) at Central and 5th in downtown Medford, this event showcases local wineries, breweries, distilleries, and artisan foods. Admission starts at $5 for five tasting tickets or $20 for a commemorative glass with ten tickets. Vendors offer samples of wine, beer, cider, coffee, and more alongside locally crafted foods.
The Smudge Pot Stroll
On Friday evening, April 11th (5 p.m.–9 p.m.), the Smudge Pot Stroll transforms downtown Medford into a culinary walking tour. Limited to 350 participants ($40 per ticket), this exclusive event offers tastings at 13–15 local restaurants featuring pear-inspired dishes. Guests receive a wine glass and can enjoy live music while strolling through downtown.
The Pear Blossom Run
Fitness enthusiasts can join the Pear Blossom Run on Saturday morning, April 12th. Hosted by the Rogue Valley Family YMCA, the event includes a 5K, 10-Mile, and family-friendly Mayor’s Cup Fun Runs (1-mile and 2-mile options). Races start between 7:00 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. Proceeds benefit YMCA youth programs.
Street Fair & More
The festival also features a vibrant street fair on April 11th (noon–10 p.m.) and April 12th (7 a.m.–6 p.m.) in downtown Medford. With over 100 vendors offering crafts, food trucks, games, and live music, it’s a family-friendly hub of activity.
A Tradition Rooted in Community
Whether you’re cheering at the parade, indulging in local flavors at the Pear A Fare or Smudge Pot Stroll, or running through downtown during the Pear Blossom Run, this festival promises unforgettable memories.
